The El Dorado Arts Council recently moved into a 2500 square foot space on Main Street in Historic Downtown Placerville, in the heart of the Sierra Foothills. Having moved from from a tiny office, the new ArtSpace accommodates a gallery and room for music events and arts related workshops. We have long needed an arts center in our area, as many in our community live in rural settings (such as ourselves). There is a great diversity of artists, theatres and dance studios, etc. scattered around our area, but until now there was not a physical center to unite and represent us. Since most of the space will serve as a gallery and must stay multi-functional, I painted a mural in the restroom. It is a celebration of the diversity of arts alive in our area.
Wherever possible, I have used objects or subjects that directly tie to local artists, past or present. Many thanks to the following for their contributions: To Thom Bentley, musician extrordinaire, and member of In Full Swing and the Tepid Club of Cool, for the loan of his French Horn; to Dustin Jack of Fretted Americana for the photo of the iconic 1954 Stratacaster; to Peter Wolfe of the Imagination Theatre for access to their wonderful selection of costumes (my favorite of which won the prime spot on the door); to Dan Crary for creating and sharing his wonderful music; to Debi Worth of El Dorado Dance Academy for the loan of her well-worn ballet slippers; to Monte Hendricks of Hendricks Banjos for spending an afternoon in his studio helping me photograph his fabulous banjo; to Hugh Hoeger of SayWhat? who arranged and tweaked and provided all of the text and musical notation that grace these walls; and to Mark Twain, for his enduring wit and wisdom.

That is very cool! It is always nice to find a bathroom that is inviting...though you may have visitors disappear for long stretches in there to check it out!
